| After a long day of game driving, it’s time to return back up the crater wall. It’s not without heavy hearts that we say farewell to this part of our African experience, but our time here is up, so we sigh and begin the ascent up to our campsite. The rest is, as they say, history: a final night at the camp; a long drive back to Arusha, only interrupted by a short shopping spree for souvenirs, and our spare tire breaking off its rack at the back of the rover; a sad goodbye to our outstanding guide, and new friend, Daniel; a welcome shower at the Klub Afriko hotel; a final meal prepared by Sam; a happy reunion with Urassa, before we have to depart for the airport, and say the rest of our goodbyes to him, to our driver David, and to the friendly staff at Klub Afriko; a long flight to Amsterdam and another long flight back to California; and then a very welcome long night’s sleep in our own beds, after a couple of weeks spent in tents in the Tanzanian wilderness. How strange to go to sleep in one’s own bed, when the last time we slept it was in a tent on the Ngorongoro crater rim, halfway around the world. Our dreams fill with the sights, sounds, and smells of Africa. |
